Hi Charlotte, are you starting to research your family history? It's a fascinating hobby and one that you can leave for a few years and then take up again. The golden rule is that you should start with what you know and then work backwards collecting as much evidence as you can on the way.

I would begin with your own details - a copy of your own FULL birth certificate - and then the BMD certificates for your parents and grandparents. These can be bought if they don't have copies.

The other thing you should do without delay is to interview any elderly relatives about their memories and knowledge of their family. Make a list of questions before you start (things like: what were your parents/grandparents/brothers & sisters names? Did anyone die as children? Where did you/they live? What work did they do? Dates they remember) and WRITE DOWN their answers in a book. Make a note of who you were speaking to and the date. Ask them to spell out any names. Ask them if they have any family BMD certificates you can copy/photograph. Look at their old family photo albums with them and ask who people are. If possible write on the back of the photo the names and dates using a soft pencil. Take a copy of the photo. In years to come, when this person has passed on, you will have these notes and your regret will be that you didn't ask them more about their family!

I'm very willing to share my research with you - but it's always a good idea to check for yourself - if possible. A lot of the fun is the detective work rather than simply accepting a ready-made family tree.

I didn't know that Charlotte Measures (née Lord) committed suicide. Do you have any idea why? If you live in Leicester you could go to the archives and look at old copies of the Leicester Mercury since you have an idea about the date.

Just recently I have discovered that George Henry and Charlotte had two children they called Doreen. The first died in 1927 when she was a baby. The second was born in 1930. Please could you tell me when your Grandmother Janet was born?

I look forward to hearing from you,
Jan
