Thomas Francis Meagher, How Am I Related?!?

I've read with great fascination all the many different accounts of oral family history connecting people to the Irish Patriot Thomas Francis Meagher. I, too was raised with confidence that he was my ancestor but am now on a "mission" to find out just what that connection was. We were always told that he was "our cousin". I see over and over valuable information coming from David Smith regarding the most up to date pedigree file on the Meagher family and would most humbly request that same from him if he still posts here. I would appreciate any direction towards finding out more about my ancestor.
Some names that might help are the following.
My paternal great-grandmother was Mary Jane Frances Meagher (b1859 d1933) in NY. She married my great-grandfather Owen Aloysius Haley in 1880 in Brooklyn, NY.
Her parents were James Stephen Meagher (b1835 d1889) and Mary Haley (b1824 d1904) both born in Ireland and died in NY.
James Stephen's parents were Dennis Meagher and Judith McCarthy (no dates) in Ireland with the final ancestors name being Stephen Meagher (no date) in Ireland but had to be born in the late 1700's.
My only thought as to my connection to TFM is through perhaps his grandfather or great-grandfather themselves or their siblings. I'm completely stuck at this point and that is why I find myself on this site.
Thank you so much to anyone who might be able to steer me in the right direction. Connie Haley Donohue, Lexington, KY
