No doubt there were hundreds of wives named Mary in the 1870 census, but the original post gave her birthdate and maiden name. From the 1870 and 1880 census she was born in Georgia. This narrows it down quite bit. If you search the 1860 census for Mary Mead, born 1851 +/1 year in Georgia, it yields just one result.
