Hi, I got your email, but I guess I can reply here.

I don't suppose we're related. My family was living in Connecticut until about 1800, and spread out from there to NY, PA, Ohio and the upper midwest.

You said you're just getting started with genealogy, so here are some useful links. For the 1880 census, you can check here:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

They also have quite a lot of other info there.

USGENWEB has a lot of good stuff for individial states and counties. Some counties have a huge amount of information, others not so much.

http://www.usgenweb.org/

I checked Polk Co. Ark and you're in luck there. They have the 1860 and 1870 census. Also living in Polk Co. in 1870 were:

Francis Mead 51 years old, born in SC
Mary Mead 48 years old, born in GA.
and some of their younger children.

So I think that makes it pretty certain that Francis and Mary were Mary Lavina's parents. There's all kinds of information they might have on individual county sites, like marriage licenses, obituaries, newspaper articles, things that can tell you more about them as people.

For other censuses you can try Ancestry. Google, for example, 1820 census ancestry. You can't get all of the features without the subscription, but if you try a few different kinds of searches you can squeeze quite a lot of information out of them.

Once you go back to 1840 and before, there's less information in the census. In 1820 there are just heads of households. In the 1820 census there were just these two Meads in South Carolina:

M. Mead in Charleston SC
Patrick Mead in Union County, SC
