The Somerset RO has a good search program:

http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/

They have Parish records only from 1724, but there are Bishop's transcripts for Hornblotton:

1605-09; 1611 defective; 1615-16; 1621-23; 1629-30; 1635-36; 1640-41; 1663; 1666-67; 1669-70; 1675-76; 1695; 1701; 1703-09; 1800-13.

Also tax records at the National Archives might be useful if John’s family had lived there for a generation or two.

The Hearth Tax Returns of 1670-71 - E179/172/434 - look like they were very comprehensive.
