I'll attempt to answer my own question. I found this in the Illinois Journal, Springfield, Thursday, March 23, 1848, Page 2, Column 3: "A fatal accident befel Mr. MEECHEM, of this city, on Saturday last. He had gone with his cattle, without other assistance, into the timber to get logs. It (in) loading one, it fell upon him, and deprived him of life. He was found several hours after the accident occurred. His funeral took place on Sunday. He was a well disposed, industrious man, and has left a large family."
Of course, it's very disappointing -- to say the least! -- that the Illinois Journal did not include "Mr. MEECHEM's" first name. However, I'm convinced that "Mr. MEECHEM" was Joseph Meacham, son of Dr. Thomas and Sarah/Sally Meacham and father of my great-great grandfather, Morrison Meacham. I believe Joseph's wife was Mary Anna Lowery Meacham, b. 1815-1817, St. Lawrence County, NY, d. 9/7/1884, Springfield, IL. Was very confused until I realized there were two Joseph Meachams born in 1806 to Joseph and Thomas Meacham, both sons of Samuel Meacham II. Joseph Mecham II was born 2/1/1806 in NH, while Joseph son of Dr. Thomas Meacham was born in May, 1806, in VT. Subject to correction (and further verification, I hope)I believe the latter to be my great-great-great grandfather, who died 3/18/1848 in Sangamon County, IL.
