It has been confirmed that Nathan Smith was born on November 25, 1771, in the Town of Manchester, Bennington County, VT. It appears that he married Rosannah Foster in about 1796/97,. probably in Bennington County, VT. However, they are not listed on the 1800 and 1810 censuses in the Town(ship) of Manchester, or any other Township in Bennington County, VT, at that time. The Town of Manchester has no birth records for their children there. The only clue we have is the 1870 and 1880 censuses which state that their daughter, Mahala, was born in "ME" in 1810. Another researcher checked for the 1800 and 1810 censuses for Maine and said the male & female markes on both of these censuses indicate that they may be the family residing in East Andover, York County, ME, at that time. Did Maine keep birth records at that time like Vermont did? Looking for a needle in a haystack, MaryLu in Minnesota Notify Administrator about this message?
