Beverly,
Thanks for the info. Just one extra point. At various times descendents of Edmund Mahar (Eamon Meagher) have given various birth places for him. I seriously doubt if he was born in Scotland since I have audited the US Census for Mahar from 1790 to 1930. Over 95% of the Mahars were from Ireland. One descendent, Donald Sprague, said he was born in Belfast, Ireland and I suspect that is close but no evidence. Another descendent, Debbie Leavitt, said he was born in Warrington, England. I checked the Birth records of Warrington and none can be found. All I can say is he probably lived in Warrington for a time. In Scotland you have the name " Mar" as in the "Earl of Mar". Possibly it is kin to Mahar but never spelled that way. The Mahars were originally from Tipperary, County and are an ancient Irish Clan( 2000 yrs.) having inhabited Ikkerin (Part of Tipperary's Northeast) for a long time. The first hint of a surname was o Meachair (O Meacair). Meacair means "amicable" I believe being an obsolete gaelic word for that term. The "O" was dropped in the 17th century and it became Meachair. The British scribes, after Cromwell, began to spell it Meagher without the "O". Some Irish will disagree with me on that statement but that is what I found. In the 18th century the British scribes changed it to "Maher" . In corollary to Maher, Mahar was formed. Some of the clan was dispersed after Cromwell in the 1650's but the majority stayed in Tipperary. The Tipperary Clan maintained the name Maher. You will not find a Mahar from Tipperary or a sizeable amount of Mahar's in Ireland today. For the most part these were the displaced of the Clan. That led to the wrong assertion that the name Mahar is the american version of the name Meagher or Maher. My census analysis indicates that assumption is incorrect. Mahar was a name, somewhere in Ireland, that disappeared with the 20% loss of population at the time of the Potato famine. I have also found Mahar's from Greece, Germany and Poland who must have left Ireland and went to Europe. That still don't answer where Edmund was born.
