Hi all. Thanks for the good words on this site about the Greene Plantation Historical Society. At the moment there is good news. We have a new President, a young man by the name of Allen Curry, who is very interested in preserving history of the area. We have re-grouped, elected officers, as of Fall, 2006. On the 9th of September, 2006, we had a small but energetic group meet at the one-room schoolhouse for the purpose of a cleaning bee. The vandals have repeatedly smashed out the windows [new windows replaced in 1991], causing glass to careen across the width of the building. We cleaned up glass, and debris. In 1908, the one-room Greer's Corner Schoolhouse will be 100 years old. Our objectives, to let the building be a beacon to scholars of all ages to see how different schooling was a century ago. My father, Amon A. Morse, attended school there, starting about 1910, and was a young janitor, keeping the fires going, the firewood lugged in, sweeping, and probably cleaning the outhouse. I have written a story of him as janitor, which a local newspaper, the Citizen, aka Village Soup will soon be publishing. My other stories are being published there also, as well as on the Waldo County, Maine website. At this point in time, the schoolhouse is in dire need of a new roof. We are raising money, as a small struggling Historical Society, to shingle the roof before another Maine winter. If you would like to be a member of the Greene Plantation Historical Society, at a cost of $5. per year, per person, or if you feel it in your hearts to give a donation to repair the building, which is on the National Historic Register, was built in 1908, feel free to contact me at the email address posted with this message. A physical address for the Historical Society if 169 Howard Road, Belmont, Maine 04952. Very sincerely and God bless. Isabel Morse Maresh.
