ESCANABA,NOV 25, 1883

FRIEND EPRIHAM (EPHRAIM).

I WILL TRY AND WRITE YOU A FEW LINES TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I AM WELL AND HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN YOU ALTHOUGH I SUPPOSE THAT YOU THOUGHT THAT I HAD BUT FAR FROM IT. I HAVE BEEN FIREING ON THE ROAD FOR A WHILE BUT AS IT IS GETTING COLD TO HANDLE THE IRON ORE THEY HAVE LAID OFF A GREAT MANY TRAINS. AS THAT AS I WAS A NEW FIREMAN I GOT LAID OFF FOR THE WINTER BUT SHALL GO ON AGAIN IN THE SPRING AT PRESENT I AM ASSISTANT FOREMAN IN THE YARD AND SHALL REMAIN THERE UNTIL SPRING. I AM NOT GETTING BUT $43. PER MONTH FOR THE WINTER BUT ON THE ROAD I SHALL GET $65. PER MONTH AND THAT IS BETTER THAN FARMING IT IS DANGEROUS TO BE SURE BUT I THINK THAT THAT IS BETTER THAN I CAN DO AT ANYTHING ELSE DON'T YOU. I HAD A LETTER FROM ANOTHER COMPANY OFFERING ME A SITUATION AS TIE INSPECTOR AND CHECKER OF MATERIAL AT $2.25 PER DAY BUT I SHALL NOT EXCEPT OF IT.

I WOULD LIKE TO BE AT HOME FOR A WHILE. I WISH THAT I COULD GET AS GOOD A SITUATION NEARER HOME BUT AFTER I GET SO THAT I CAN HANDLE AN ENGINE IN GOOD SHAPE I CAN GET ONE MOST ANYWHERE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW WE COME OUT ON THOSE CIGARS ON THAT WHEAT. I THINK THAT I SHOULD ENJOY THOSE NICELY. I SUPPOSE THAT EMMA IS STILL AT ROCKLAND. PLEASE TELL HER THAT I HAVE NOT GOT GOOD AND HOME SICK YET BUT I SUPPOSE THAT SUSIE IS SICK OF HOME. TELL JOHNEY THAT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HIM WRITE TO ME AND LET ME KNOW HOW THE PATTERK AND PRINCE IS GETTING ALONG. I DO NOT THINK OF ANYTHING MORE THAT WOULD INTEREST YOU SO I WILL CLOSE FOR THE PRESENT. HOPEING TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON. PLEASE GIVE MY RESPECTS TO ALL INQUIRING FRIENDS.

YOURS TRULY,
A.L. PAUL
