Sometimes woman of wealth kept their last names. (I found that out in some of my own family research)
In those times woman who married had to turn over all her wealth to their husbands.
If a woman was wealthier than the husband they often kept there maiden names.
This also made it very hard to track children born of marriages, because sometimes the children carried the mothers maiden name and sometimes the fathers name. If they carried the mothers name they would often get permission at a certain age from the father to take on the fathers last name especially if the children became famous such as a senator or artist.
Hope this info can help you some how
