The town office in Newry can probably help you. The address given at the Oxford Co. GenWeb site is:

Newry Town Office
Bear River Rd., General Delivery, Newry, ME 04261
Tel: 207-824-3123
Hours: Tues, Wed, Thurs 9am - 5pm

The fact that John Morse was born in Island Pond, Vt., is suggestive, as Island Pond was the terminus of the Grand Trunk Railroad that was built through Oxford County in the 1850s. At Island Pond was the roundhouse where the trains were turned around to head back to Portland. This might explain how someone from northern Vermont ended up in western Maine at such an early date.
