I checked the census records at the National Archives and found the following:
1840 Bethel,Oxford County
William Whitman age 50-60
wife aged between 30 and 40
2 daughters under 5

1850 Bethel, Oxford County
Wm Whitman 63
Betsey E Whitman 44
?elsefa Whitman Female 14
Corgianna Whitman Female 12
Charles R. Male 9
Mary A female 1

1860 Census Chesterfield, Franklin County
Charles R. Whitman 19 appears to have been a laborer on the Lothrop farm

Possibly this William Whitman is the one born in MA in 1788 to John Whitman and Betty Tirrel. I could not find the rest of the family in the 1860 census. Plan to search the records further.

Have also sent for a copy of the marriage record of my great-grandparents Charles Whitman and Florence (Wyman) Ladd. I hope to be able to connect them with this Whitman family.

I really do appreciate your suggestions and will keep you posted.

Regards, Leah
