Mr. Kerwin I was surprised and delighted to find a response to my posting. Thanks so much for your time and expertise, particularly with regard to the limitations of the census. Benjamin's son, Harry D. (Daniel) Salley (with the broken leg) was my great grandfather and my mother knew his siblings, so I know that the Benjamin listed on the 1880 census was our B. (Incidentally, Harry eventually lost the limb and fashioned his own wooden leg.)I was unaware of Benjamin's military service and was fascinated to hear of it. Will pursue that (if more records exist) and will continue to seek proof that B. was the son of Daniel Salley and Rachael York.Yes, there were at least two Benjamin Y. Salleys, but the second one of which I am aware was a nephew of our Benjamin and I believe much younger, so another B.Y.S. born in MA in the latter 1820's demands more research. (I do know that prior to 1810 or so the area which is now Maine was shown as Mass on some maps, but to my knowledge Maine was a state by 1920, so am confused by the birth in Taunton, MA of another Benjamin York Salley within three years of our B's birth in the latter 1820's. Perhaps the MA/ME border lines were redefined somewhat?) Clearly I need to do more digging. At any rate, again thanks so much for your help.It is very much appreciated.
