That's a great point Jack! ...
What did census takers do if members of a family or an entire family were away for any period of time due to their work? ...
Seamen could have been gone months at a time or even a year or more! ... Especially with the slower ships of the 1850's as compared with today. ...
If census takers knew that certain people were supposed to be there but their jobs had them away for extended periods of time, did they come back and count them months or a year or more later? ... or ... Did they just never get counted? ... How did they allow for this because this problem would have been extremely common!
What would they have done then, and, for that matter, what would they do today? ...
A very interesting situation! ... How did they handle this?
A WHOLE ENTIRE COMMUNITY COULD HAVE BEEN MISSING DURING CERTAIN TIMES OF THE YEAR! ... How would they have handled this? ...
Does anyone know? ...
I'm trying to envision a census taker in a row boat trying to catch up with a fleet of tall ships with their sails set towards the horizon ... :) lol ...
