Clarke family of Newcastle

My gg-grandmother was Mary Etta (Clark) Hedrick who was born in Lincoln Co., Maine, in 1849. Her parents were William (b. Dec. 10, 1816, Newcastle) and Abigail (Coombs) Clark(e) also of Lincoln Co., Maine who moved from Maine and subsequently settled in W.Va. I believe that William's father is John Clark (b. Jan. 1, 1775 in Jefferson) , son of James Clark (b. ??), the son of Josiah Clarke (b. Feb. 20, 1703/04).

However, I have just very recently obtained a digital copy of David Quimby Cushman's book "History of Ancient Sheepscot and Newcastle, Maine" in which he shows James' father as "Ichabod Clarke, Sen." who came from Kittery, ME. He then lists the children of Ichabod as those which I see others showing as the children of Josiah Clarke, including a son named Ichabod. Does anyone have any ideas about why Cushman (who I understood stayed with one of the Josiah (or Ichabod) grandchildren while he was writing his book in the 1800's, published in 1882) might refer to Josiah as Ichabod ?

Any information about this Clark(e) line would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Russ Tice
