I don't have ancestry.com, but I do use their search engines anyway. I looked at the 1860 census for any John Rositer (soundex). He's on the index as John Rosite. I know it is the same person because he's in the 3rd ward on all three censuses. Also he has the same neighbors (Griggs, Johnson and Peed/Reed). It's just him and Mary:

John Rosite 30 boat builder, b.NY
Mary 2? b.MD

This is consistent with the other source I have stating they were married in 1856. Do you know if there is a state census in MD for 1855? If so maybe he would be on it. I could not pin him down in 1850.
