This is interesting; your John appears to be in the Auburn State Prison in Cayuga Co, NY 1880 as "Jas M. Corbett age 23". I believe this is him because the Cayuga Co genweb site has a marriage for John Corbett to Rose Doyle in 1883. Check it out for yourself at the following link

the marriage info came from this church according to the site:
Saint Mary's Church in Auburn, New York index to marriages from August 15, 1868 to and including November 27, 1913
Maybe you can get a copy of the actual marriage from the church or the county clerk and it might have the parent names for this couple. I'll look around a little bit more and see what comes up. Since he is listed as Jas on two census records it's possible that was one of his names.
