I think the correct family will most likely be the one in Whitefield, Maine and not Augusta. There are too many coincidences.
The 1870 census of Whitefield shows:
Benjamin Edgecomb 73 Farmer b.Maine
Martha 68 b.ME
Henry 30 b.ME (incorrect age?)
Willard W 33 seaman, b.ME
Lizzie 21 b.AFRICA
George 2 b.ME (could be your George????)
Adalaide 8 mos b.ME
1860 census of Whitefield had son Henry age 30 and son Willard age 23.The fact that Willard was a seaman could explain why he met a woman from Africa.
1850 Whitefield ME has
Benjamin Edgecomb 54 Mariner b.ME
Martha 48 b.ME
Henry B merchant age 21 (all children b.ME)
Frederick 16 farmer
Willard W 13
Ellen A 10
Also there is a post on rootsweb.com that states this Willard married a woman from S. Africa (last name Budge) and that he died in S. Africa.I think it's interesting because the names Henry, Frederick, Willard and Adalaide repeat in your family.I can probably get you copies of the census pages for this family if you like.email me at [email protected] you have it in hand you can research it further and see what develops.
by the way, the 1880 census shows Martha Edgecomb living with her son Henry (husband Benjamin must have died 1870s).Also of note is that the family of Willard Edgecomb no longer appears in Maine that year (moved to Africa?????)Whitefield is probably only 15 miles from Augusta, ME.
