Asa was one of the oldest soldiers in the Revolutionary War and one who served longer than most soldiers. Upon enlistment, he was almost forty years of age.

Prior to his enlistment, according to the family letter written by my grandfather, he had served previous military service.

It stated that at a young age, Asa was left an orphan and life was very difficult for him, being alone. It is my belief he was bonded out to farmers and to a tailor where he learned tailoring skills, though never practiced them in the private marketplace.

Asa joined the British military and served in Canada. He was present at the fall of Louisbourg.

When the news of unrest and impending war were heard in Canada, American soldiers serving with the British began to defect.

Asa and two cousins (also defined as "nephews" in Colonial times) deserted. They were chased by British troops and saved themselves by hanging from the rafters of an icy bridge. They knew they were certain to be hung if they were apprehended.

The British gave up the search and they took the long, difficult walk home, back to Massachusetts, from Canada. It was a difficult trek as they struggled through the thick of forests and trudged through swampland.

One cousin was taken hostage and killed. Asa and another arrived in Cambridge. This most likely is true, for in Revolutionary War Soldier Records of Massachusetts and Maine, there were two Snellings that served in the 6th Massachusetts Line. John Snelling and Asa Snelling and both were at Cherry Valley. It is quite likely, he had a brother John, or John was John Dowen, nee Snelling, his nephew.

In February of 1777 he enlisted in the 6th Continental line.

This date is significant, as of that month, George Washington decreed that soldiers of color could enlist. There were others serving and quite a few served at the Battle of Bunker Hill and other engagements. However, the Virginians feared giving persons of color arms could lead to revolt and a security issue for them.

If Asa was a person of color, the above would be highly significant.

In the 1790 census, Asa's household is listed as one free white woman (Elizabeth Hope) and six others of color.

After the war, Asa moved to Andover, Massachusetts and worked as a farm laborer there. Farm laborers were in high demand and made excellent wages as New England did not rely upon slave labor. There were some who used slaves, however slavery ended in Massachusetts in 1783 and there was a labor shortage.

They were obviously not a well to do family. His son, John Haman Snelling, was bonded out. On 4/23/1802, an advertisement was placed in the Newburyport Herald by Stephen Tyler reading:

Last February, from the Subscriber, an indented boy about sixteen years old, by the name of John H. Snelling, whoever shall take up said boy and return him to the subscriber, shall have five dollars reward, and no charges paid--also I forbid all persons harboring or trusling him on my account, as they would avoid the pain of law. Stephen Tyler Boxford April 23

The same ad was again placed on April 30, 1802.

TYLER, Stephen was born. 9 JUN 1760 in West Boxford, Mass. and died. 25 NOV 1812. He was the son of Gideon Tyler and Mehitable Kimball and owned a 119 acre farm in Boxford, valued at $1760.00, which was quite a large amount of money in that time.

It is suspected that the Snelling family relocated to Oxford County, Maine, around the area of Andover Maine around 1801, because John Snelling is found there with his wife Persis around 1810 and Aaron Snelling, his son, is also found in Fayette in the 1810 census. He is listed as a person of color with five other persons of color. There is no indication that Elizabeth Hope resides in the household and I suspect she may have died by that time.

Two of his sisters are found in Oxford County, marrying. Your grandmother Elisa and Melinda Snelling (noted as Belinda Snelling on some records) Melinda is listed as a person of color, married to John Pease. Charles Green Snelling lived in Caledonia, Vermont. He was the youngest, but also lived in Canada for a while. Melinda lived in Canada for a while.

These are Asa's children...I have a lot more on the family...I hope this helps.
