The answer to my question came from Mark Richards to whom I would like to express my "thanks."
He stated the following information came from Heywood's "History of Upton Maine"
13 June 1804 - A deed registered in Fryeburg, York County, Maine (district of Massachusetts) conveys land from the state of Massachusetts to Ezra Hounsfield and Ann Davis. The land is referred to as township Letter B according to a survey map made by John Peabody in 1792. The land was originally owned by Hounsfield and Samuel March. March's interest was assigned to Henry Davis, who died and left it to his wife Ann. Apparently there was some money due ($3,850.86) the State of Massachusetts that needed to be paid in order for Hounsfield and Davis to gain clear title.
7 March 1805 - Oxford County is set off from York County, Maine.
25 Sept 1818 - Ann Davis sells her interest to Bartholomew Hounsfield, presumably the son of Ezra who is now deceased. Price $7500.
1820 - Maine becomes a state.
1836 - Hounsfield sells all land not previously sold to Mitchell and Hyde of Boston for $19,680.00.
2 Oct 1840 - Township Letter B becomes Plantation Letter B in accordance with an 1840 act of the Maine State Legislature allowing any community not large enough to form a Town to become a Plantation.
9 Feb 1860 - By special act of the Legislature, Plantation Letter B becomes the Town of Upton, with 51 voters.
Thought you would all be interested in receiving this information as well.
