The Stilson Hilton you're looking for was the son of William III and Margaret Stilson. He was born in New Harbor in 1702 and died in Manchester, Mass. in 1740. He married Hannah Sevey (or Seavey)prob. about 1724 and they had 7 children - at least I have seven for them - Stilson, Hannah, Elizabeth, Thomas, Hannah (#2), Amos and Samuel. The first six were all born in Manchester, Mass. Samuel may have been born at Broad Bay. It would also appear that Samuel was born after his father died since Stilson died in 1740/41 and Samuel was born 10/7/1741. The family went back and forth between the two places a lot during the French and Indian Wars. William Hilton III died in Manchester in June 23, 1723 and is buried in the old cemetery in Manchester center. His wife, Margaret Stilson Hilton, remained in Manchester (and remarried I think - can't find my info on that at the moment). William IV who married Mary Lee of Manchester returned to Broad Bay about 1742 and tried to resettle in the area again with somewhat dire consequences. According to Ford's message your line follows Stilson (William III, William II, William) and Hannah's son Samuel, through John and then to Jane. My Hilton line goes through William IV and Mary Lee (too many Williams!!!) I haven't done much research too far removed from my direct line. I know a little bit about the Helmerhausen family. They were late immigrants to Waldoboro - not part of the three ships that came in the 1750s. I have heard from Waldoboro historians that indeed the family did shorten the name. The family seemed to have moved away from the Broad Bay area where the Hiltons were and went to the part of Waldoboro situated by what's called Orff's corner and the Jefferson town line on Route 32. In other words, they sort of went up the Medomak River. I think that there are some descendents around the area, but the name itself disappeared from here a long time ago. (I'm writing from the neighboring town of Nobleboro). There's a bit written about the Helmerhausen family in the Broad Bay book which came out several years ago which I don't have handy at the moment. I have a very old account book (late 1700s) by a Helmerhausen which I picked up at a yard sale. I was interested in it because this man had done work for my Hilton ancestor Joshua Lee Hilton. Its a fascinating ledger because this man did quite a bit of work for Gen. Henry Knox and it lists how he was paid - sometimes by money and sometimes by goods. The early Hilton story, which is extremely fascinating, is well documented by Stahl in his "History of Old Broad Bay". Notify Administrator about this message?
