ULMERS: Broad Bay to Essex Co, MA

According to the authors of BROAD BAY PIONEERS (BBP), pg 74, The [Hans]Martin Ulmer family arrived in Broad Bay (now Waldoboro, ME) on board the ship Elizabeth in 1753 from Enzberg. He was a pot maker, age 38.
With him his wife Maria Barbara Ulmer, age 30, and four daughters: Rosina Barbara, age 14; Elisabeth Catharina 12; [Hannah]Jacobina 6, Maria Margaretha 2.
BBP pg 315-316 shows Johann [Hans] Martin Ulmer married Maria Barbara Steinmetz {d/o Johann George Steinmetz, the tailor}, in Enzberg. Maria died in Danvers, Essex, MA 10/30/1808. Johann Martin Ulmer d bef 1762 in Salem, MA. Their 7th child was daughter (Hannah) Jacobina Ulmer bapt 4/12/1747 Enzberg, died 2/2/1810 in Friendship, ME. She married (1) 4/16/1767 Benjamin Beckett {s/o John Beckett & Rebecca Beadle} in Salem [MA]. Her 2nd marriage was to David Malcolm {s/o Andrew Malcolm} in Salem.
BBP pg 133 shows an Andrew Malcolm listed 10/6/1777, a member of Captain Jacob Ludwig's Company, "raised for the investment of Castine", served from 10/6 to 12/22/1777. Andrew's name appears again on pg 136 as one of six men who received wages "for serving at Machias under Captain Jacob Ludwig." [unknown if this Andrew Malcolm is related to David Malcolm - No additonal info on them in BBP.

Johann Martin Ulmer d bef 1762 in Salem, MA. His widow md {2} 6/22/1762 to Samuel Stone in Salem, MA; She married {3} 4/3/1764 Samuel Ropes in Salem, MA.

Other Ulmer children married in Salem, Essex Co, MA:

Rosina Barbara Ulmer md 9/20/1762 John Bullock {s/o John Bullock & Elizabeth Stillman}. She died in neighboring Danvers, Essex Co, MA 11/18/1798.

Elizabeth Catherina Ulmer md 12/20/1762 to John Ellison. She was buried in Salem 10/22/1808.

Maria Margaretha Ulmer md {1} 9/25/1769 David Joseph Hill in Salem; {2} 7/9/1778 Abijah Reed in Danvers; {3} 6/11/1796 Matthew Sylvester in Danvers. Maria died in Salem, MA 10/1826.

Jane Ulmer married 4/3/1775 Stephen Waters in Danvers, MA She died 3/7/1799 in neighboring Beverly, Essex Co, MA

Mary Ellenor Ulmer married {1} 12/26/1773 William Beckett {s/o William Beckett}:{2} 4/22/1783 George Ulmer {s/o John Ulmer & Mary Catherine Remilly} both in Salem. Mary died 2/10/1824 in Rockland, ME and buried in Tolman Cemetery.

Meritable Ulmer was bapt 3/17/1759 in Salem, MA. She md {1} 7/3/1759 Benjmin Ashton in Marblehead; {2} 10/1780 John Sinclair in Salem; {3} 11/20/1786 James Dorsey in Danvers; {4} 11/29/1794 {Capt} Daniel Jacobs in Danvers. She died in Henniker, Merrimack, NH, 1/6/1816.

BBP pg 422-424 outlines the Johann Jacob Schaffer family. The surname Schaffer became known as the English equivalent "Shepard". Johann Jacob Schaffer / Shepard was born 8/17/1726 in Langenscheid, Hessen-Nassau, Germany the s/o Johann Jacob & Anna Margaret Schaeffer. He died in Waldoboro 10/11/1807. He married 1757 in Broad Bay (now Waldoboro). In 1757 he married Ursula Wolfsgruber {d/o Niclaus Wolfsgruber & Elizabeth Gunn. They had 11 children.
Their 1st 7 children were all born in Broad Bay. Their 8th child, John Shepard was born 3/11/1771 in Marblehead, Essex, MA; married 6/30/1796 Ann Barbara Hahn in Waldoboro; he died in 12/12/1850 in Belfast, Waldo Co, ME. John & Barbara had 9 children all born in Waldoboro. William Shepard was thier 3rd child and 1st son. He was born 7/21/1801; married 11/2/1820 Hannah Butler Malcolm {d/o David Malcolm & Hannah 'Jacobina' Ulmer} in Waldoboro.
