Roberta Lewis, 88, died Friday, March 26, at the Gregory Wing in St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor.
Born March 14, 1917 in Port Jervis, New York, she was the daughter of Robert and Margurite Gutherie.
In her early years she worked as a nanny in New York City. She married Kenneth Lewis in June 1938 and they made their home in Port Jervis, New York. Mr. Lewis enlisted in the Navy in 1944; Mrs. Lewis raised their three children and worked in a factory at night while he was gone for over two years. During World War II life was difficult with shortages of food and supplies, but Roberta took care of her family. After 35 years, Mr. Lewis retired from Prudential Insurance. Following his retirement, Roberta and Ken managed an apartment complex in Monticello, New York. She was responsible for all the landscaping there. When her oldest daughter became ill, Roberta took care of her for two years.
She was a member of the Veterans Auxiliary and of the Order of the Eastern Star in Callicoon, New York. She enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards, watching quiz shows on television, and doing crossword puzzles.
In 2001 Mrs. Lewis moved to St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor to be near her daughter Carolyn.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Lewis in 1992; and her daughter, Linda Lewis Hillriegel in January 2005.
Survivors include by two daughters, Carolyn Moore of Southport, and Jan Lewis of Liberty, New York; one son, Robert Lewis of Windsor, New York; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grand-children; one brother, Warren Gutherie of Daytona Beach, Florida; and one sister, Alice Millspaulgh of Rochester, New York; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held in Port Jervis, New York at a later date.
