Trying to determine parents/origins of Deborah McFarland, born ~1797/8, probably in the Belfast or Northport vicinity. I do know that some McFarland families from Lincoln County moved north into the Belfast area. About 1812 she married Joseph Bushee (aka Bushy, Bushey, Bouchie), a French-Canadian shipwright, from Riviere Ouelle, Quebec, on the south bank of the St. Lawrence. The family appears on the 1820 and 1830 US Census in Northport, Me. In the early 1830's they moved to Essex County, Mass - living in Salem (where 2 younger sons born & 2 daughters marry), then Newbury and Newburyport. The 1850 census puts Deborah's birthdate at 1798 in Maine. Death records of four of Deborah's children supply varying info about her: Susan M. (Bushee) Floyd b. Sept/Oct 1813, BELFAST, Me father: Joseph Bushee, b. Canada mother: Deborah WELCH, b. Me Angelette (Bushee) Rich b. 26 Sept 1815, Me father: Joseph "Bouchie," b.Canada mother: Deborah McFARLAND, b. Me (note: birth record of one of Angelette's children states Angelette's birthplace as NorthWOOD, NH - contradicting all other records showing her birthplace as Maine. Perhaps it was an error for NorthPORT, Me?) George J. Bushee b. 28 Mar 1833, Salem, Mass father: Joseph Bushee, b. Canada mother: Deborah ----, b. NORTHPORT, Me Edwin Augustus Bushee b. 30 Dec 1835, Salem, Mass father: Joseph Bushee, b. --- mother: Deborah McFARLAND, b. ---- Deborah's husband dies in 1857, Newburyport, Mass. "Mrs. Joseph Bushee" is then listed in subsequent Newburyport city directories until 1860, then disappears. Can not locate her in 1860 census anywhere in New England (tried all sorts of maneuvers to account for possible misspelling of surname, or being recorded under another family's name.) No death record exists for her in Mass VRs. Can anyone help? Might there be a Welch family connection to Deborah's family - maybe that's how the surname came up in one child's death record??? Thanks for any pointers! - Suzanne Notify Administrator about this message?
