Hi Joan --

I AM NOT RELATED TO THE LINEHANS in ANY WAY, and am ONLY INTERESTED in the Colliers who lived in Washington Township ca. 1815-1890's. Nonetheless, I followed your various Linehan postings around and found that NOONE is giving you any answers. So, I rolled up my sleeves and did a little independent digging. I did NOT find anything definitive about the "Dix Island" Joseph Linehan, but I DID find some stuff on who is apparently your father, Francis J(oseph?) Linehan, Jr. Following below IS EVERYTHING I could find! There is not much, but there ARE some real pearls that will get you started in the right direction -- AND SOME CONTACTS, if you dare to make them! So, here goes:

Canton (MA) Journal
Thursday, March 4, 2004

Francis J. Linehan, Jr. of Canton died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at his home. He was 77.

A 1948 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, Mr. Linehan was in professional practice as a consulting engineer for more than 50 years, founding his own consulting firm in 1952. His entry into the ranks of professional engineers was nearly delayed by the offer of a tryout with the Cleveland Rams.

*** Mike's NOTE: Rams - NFL football team. Moved from
*** Cleveland to Los Angeles and are now in St. Louis.

Among his professional accomplishments were a special award of accomplishment by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers in 1992, Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in 1986 and 1987, and as a member of the board from 1980 to 1991.

He served on the board of directors of Franciscan Children's Hospital from 1980 to 1986. He also served as a member of the governor's Special Commission for Energy Conservation from 1974 to 1977 and as a member of the Massachusetts Board of Schoolhouse Structural Standards from 1971 to 1973.

Mr. Linehan had a reputation for finding innovative solutions that benefited clients including Brown and Co., Federal Express, Fidelity, Gillette, Harvard Business School, MIT, MITRE Corp. and University Hospital.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Helen Linehan, his sons, Clark, John and Paul Linehan, and eight grandchildren, Megan, Jack, Shannon, David, Kevin, Patrick, Kelly and Christina.

Services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to Zoo New England, 1 Franklin Park Road, Boston, MA 02121.

Arrangements were made by Dockray and Thomas Funeral Home, Canton.

*** Mike's NOTE: The most important highlights, only!

1930 Federal Census

USNA Microfilm Roll Nr. T626_903, Image Nr. 1029
Reg. (Stamped) Page Nr. 239A
Census Sheet Nr. 16A
Vis. Nr. 205
Fam. Nr. 225
Lines 19-22

Linehan, Frances (sic) J., Head, M, W, 29, M@24, MA-MA-MA, Dealer, Automobiles
. " ., Beatrice D., Wife, F, W, 29, M@24, MA-MA-MA, None (i.e., has no occ.)
. " ., Frances (sic) J. Jr., Son, M, W, 3-10/12, MA-MA-MA, None
. " ., Kenneth J., Son, M, W, 9/12, MA-MA-MA, None

*** Mike's NOTE: Frances, Jr. is the Frances you queried about.
*** I have reason to believe, but NO PROOF, that his father AND
*** his mother are BOTH older than the 29 years reflected in this
*** Census. Further, I could NOT find a reasonable Linehan/Linnehan,
*** born in MA 1900 +/- 2 yrs in either the 1920 or 1910 Censuses.
*** By this, I mean I could not find one that I could DEFINITELY say
*** is the RIGHT Francis J. Linehan, by ANY name, to be the father of
*** YOUR Francis J. Linehan, Jr. Additionally, at age 3-10/12 in April
*** 1930, Francis Jr. was b. ca. May/June 1926. This stacks up with
*** info provided below, which gives his EXACT birth date. Finally,
*** the "M@24" for both Head and Wife means they "MARRIED at AGE 24."
*** Subtracting this from their claimed 29 years of age, we get about
*** 5 years -- from 1930 = married ca. 1924/25. I cannot find a birth
*** or death record for Francis Sr. or Beatrice, but from what I have
*** seen on earlier Census research, they likely married in or very
*** near to the Lynn/Saugus/Swampscott area. A personal search for the
*** marriage certificate in Essex County should be fruitful and provide
*** the missing vitals and parentage for both Francis Sr. and Beatrice.

*** Mike's NOTE: This basically means he was the OWNER of
*** an automobile dealership, located at 197 Broad in the
*** City of Lynn, MA. He lived at 32 Fuller Ave in Swampscott.

And, from "Polk's Lynn Suburban (Essex County, Mass.) Directory 1940 Including Saugus, Swampscott, Nahant and Lynnfield":

*** Mike's NOTE: the "(L)" stands for "Lynn." "Beatrice D" is
*** his wife. He also appears in the 1942 Polk's Directory (as
*** above) on Page 260, as well as on the 1946-47 Polk's Directory
*** (as above) on Page 250, with the EXACT SAME information.

A look-up on's "Public Record Index" shows this:

Name: Francis J Linehan
Birth Date: 30 May 1926
Street Address: 18 Hemlock Dr
City: Canton
County: Norfolk
State: Massachusetts
Zip Code: 02021
Phone Number: 781-828-2464
Household Members:
Name Est. Age Birth Year
Francis J Linehan 80 1926
Helen Linehan 85 1921
Helen S Linehan 85 1921
Helen S Linehan 85 1921
Helen S Linehan 81 1925
John Linehan

This is kind of funky and not necessarily up to date. It is stated that son JOHN lives there and it is very possible that wife HELEN is still alive. I next looked them up on "SuperPages":

Linehan, Francis J Jr
18 Hemlock Dr
Canton, MA 02021-1134
(781) 828-2464

THIS directory is usually CURRENT WITHIN THE LAST YEAR! So, this means there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE that this number is still active at this address, still under the name of the now-deceased Francis Jr.! I also found:

Clark Linehan
42 Blackburn Dr
Gloucester, MA 01930-2227
(978) 281-3903

There were too many Johns and Pauls to definitely identify one of them as sons of Francis Jr., but the above Clark is THE ONLY ONE in Massachusetts! Now, THOSE are the contacts I DARE you to make -- the Step-Mother and the Half-Brothers! Also, now knowing the date AND location of death, you can now easily obtain Francis Jr's death certificate. This will identify his (2nd) wife (Helen S.) along with maiden name, date of marriage, her age, etc. It might also be worthwhile to check out the records at the Mortuary that did all the preparations.

Happy hunting and BEST OF LUCK!
