In the book: Rust, Albert D. “Record of the Rust Family Embraced by Descendants of Henry Rust, Who Came From England and Settled in Hingham, Mass, 1634-1635,” 1891.
I have experienced some conjecture in his book that has come to be assumed as fact in the last 100+ years. There were Rust's that lived in Bristol Maine in the 1770's & forward with no written history that I can find.
Albert Rust understandably presumed that the Simeon in Farmington, Maine had come from Bristol (with no record that I could find). And Albert Rust presumed that this Simeon was son of Simeon in Connecticut. While this is quite likely – all of it is circumstantial.
There are several confounding related issues. There is a Jonathan Rust that also settled in the Farmington area at this same time period. The historical annals of this period could not place his origin. [Butler, Francis G. A History of Farmington, Franklin County, Maine, from the Earliest Explorations to the Present Time, 1776-1885. Press of Knowlton, McLeary, and Co., 1885.]
However, Jonathan was documented in Albert’s book as being the son of Capt. Joseph Rust of Ipswich.
One could assume that Jonathan & Simeon are brothers or 1st cousins… or it just may well be that they are just two people of the same last name in the same place not directly related [it does happen…]
The Bristol connection is even more confounding. Supposedly some of Simeon’s children ended back up in the Bristol area. What cannot be correct is that the Daniel (assumed son of Simeon) is the same Daniel that was in Bristol Maine – the one that re-married in and went to Cambridge Massachusetts (and died there). Albert Rust assumed this in his book and it has been perpetuated ever since. However there are two Daniel Russ’s in 1800 and two in 1810. However the Bristol Daniel Russ married Mary Yeaten on Oct. 23, 1798 while the Farmington Daniel Russ married Lois Sullivan on 20 Feb 1798 in Farmington. It was the Bristol Daniel that went to Cambridge NOT the Farmington Daniel. It is assumed that the Farmington Daniel was Simeon’s son. But who is to say? – he could be Jonathan’s son (???). Who is the Bristol Daniel’s Father & Mother – it’s anyone’s guess…. So as amazing as Albert’s book is – it just can’t be considered gospel…there are holes…and many unanswered questions
I’m actually surprised that there are not more records published on these Bristol Rust’s considering the wonderful documentation completed on all the Maine townships.
I just want to caution Rust descendants that there are some serious unanswered questions about the migration from Connecticut to Maine. It’s still highly likely that the Rust’s of Maine descend from Henry Rust but not necessarily……
