I no longer live in Maine but the newspaper for the Augusta area is the Kennebec Journal. The Maine State Library has archives of the KJ that go way back -- I found them very helpful when I was looking for an article from 1876. I don't remember if there was a fee but if so, it was not much. I think you can reach them through their website at www.Maine.gov/msl/services/index.html
