Do you already have his death record? That would be the obvious first place to look.
Other than that you have probably seen the James & Lydia Sanders in the Augusta vitals. I noticed one of their sons was named Daniel Foster Sanders 1808-1810. They had a son Joseph, but he died at 1 yr old in 1799 so they could have named another son Joseph later. The last entry for them is 1810 when Daniel Foster died so they may have moved after that. I see a James Sanders in Palermo 1820 who could be the one that was in Augusta up until 1810. He is over 45, his wife is 26-44 and they have two males in the home age 0-9. They also have two males age 16-25 which fits the son James b.1796 and son William b.1799 in Augusta. There are also several females.
If you don't have your Joseph's death record I would definitely go that route first. They are only about $6- $10 when you order from the Maine State archives.
