Fortunatly Otis G. Welch was named for his father Otis-
I started with the 1850 census and found the elder Otis with his family( excluding Otis G.) in Monmouth, Maine( in Kennebec County)p.67-
#208/231- Otis Welch- age 60, Clothier, b. Maine
Olive F. Welch- age 57, b. Mass
Caroline C. Welch- age 36, b. Maine
Augusta O. Welch- age 16, b. Maine
I do not know where Otis G. was in 1850???
Otis the elder is in Monmouth in the 1820 census.
Otis was in the War of 1812 under the Mass. Volunteer Militia- see-
Maj. Chandler's Battalion of Artillary- Capt. S. Ranlett's Company( enlisted at Monmouth)
His death is listed in the VR as July 8, 1860 and also in 1862 at age 72. I think he died in 1862 since the 1860 census has him as age 70-
1860 census -Monmouth-
#334/337- Otis Welch- age 70, Farmer
Olive F. - age 67
Caroline E.- age 44
Augusta O.- age 26- Teacher
all were listed as born in Maine but in the 1910 census for Monmouth O. Augusta Welch is a single , 75 yr. old female with a father b. Maine and a mother b. Mass.
The Maine Old Cemetery CD for Kennebec County has the Welch families who were burried in Monmouth- Center Cemetery
Welch, Otis - b.12 Aug,1789- d. 8 July,1862
Olive F.-b.29 April,1793- d.28 Sept,1870
Augusta- b. 1 May, 1834- d. 14 May, 1922
Mercy Cole- b. 20 May, 1764- d. 17 Aug,1845
( could this be the mother of Olive F.?)
Missing from this list but in the Monmouth VR is-
Welch ,William- died in Millord, Georgia Dec 12, 1852 at age 33
Infant son of Wm. and Elizabeth Welch- d. March 30, 1850 at age 2 days
Elizabeth B.- wife of Wm Welch d. April 12, 1850, at age 31
She was born Elizabeth B. Welch- dau of Otis and Olive and married Wm Welch.
In the Monmouth Vital records at-
the children of Otis and Olive F. Welch are-
Caroline E.- b.Oct 6,1815
Mariah L.- b.Feb 11, 1817
Elizabeth E. b.Sept , 1818
Otis G.- b. Dec 21, 1822
Albion K.P.- b. Feb 20,1825
Olivia Augusta -b.May 1, 1834
I realize the birth date you have on Otis is Dec 28, 1823.
I also noticed another variation in the 1860 census where he was listed as age 40.
1860- Denton County, Texas-
#180/181- James M. Smart? or Smout?- age 38- Merchant,b.Va.
Martha A. - age 37 b.Va
John J. - age 14 b.Va
James Eades - age 27- clerk,b.Missouri
James L. S-------? age 33, Physician,b.Va.
O.G. Welch- age 40- Lawyer, b. Maine
I see where Otis G. Welch was a Lt. Col of the 29th Texas Cavalry- Co E. formed May 1861 in Denton County, Texas.
I presume you know about the book -
Suffering To Silence, 29TH Texas Cavalry CSA Regimental History by Bradford K. Felmy and John C. Grady
Hope this has been of some help to you- I do not know what ever happened to Otis- when he died , if he got married, etc. but if he was listed as a Lawyer in the 1860 census maybe he went to college in Maine- like Bowdoin in Brunswick- which keeps records of their graduates.
Good luck with you research-
