I went through the 1850 census for a Phebe Gardiner as a 5 yr old child but only found an 81 yr old Phebe living with Levi & Eliza Gardner- was Phebe in China all her childhood?
I checked the Kennebec County cemeteries for any Mitchell who may have died before 1881 and came up with John B. Mitchell(b.1837-d.Sept 8,1874) at age 37. His wife N. Roseltha preceeded him in Nov of 1869 at age 31(poss in childbirth). She had had 2 children - Eva B(1865-1957), who married a Hamlin, and Nellie G(1869-1885), who died at age 16.
They are all buried in Elijah Mitchell's lot in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville.
In the 1870 census for Waterville John , brother Charles, and the 2 girls are living beside his folks, Elijah and Catherine.
That leaves a window of opportunity from 1870 to 1874 for Phebe to marry John Mitchell.
In the 1880 census for Waterville there is Elijah, Catherine, granddaughters Eva and Nellie and Theodore( a nephew). No Phebe.
If Phebe had married John wouldn't she had been living with the family in some way- taking care of his children?
It is clear that a Phebe Mitchell did marry Cheney Emery in 1881 and she was from Waterville- so what am I missing?
I tried to find Phebe in several census with her various last names and variations of spellings but no luck...
I also do not see the burial of Cheney or Phebe Emery in the Kennebec County cd.
