Just playing around, as I'm watching TV and found a few more things for you:
Found a Maine marriage index for Howard W. Merchant m. Melissa E. Alley on 14 Jan 1896. Lists Melissa as living in Jonesport, ME.

You're on the right track, because I found all your names listed in various census records. If you haven't found them yet....

Merchant:
1910 Mt. Desert, Hancock Co. ME Census (indexed as "Merchut")Family of Howard&Melissa, with Llewellyn Merchant living nearby.
1930 Hancock Co. ME Census

Benson:
1900 Gorham, Coos Co. NH Census (George & Frances)
1910 Auburn, Androscoggin ME Census
1930 Amherst, Hampshire, MA Census
