Looks like this may be another dead-end. Seems to be raising more questions than providing answers.

If Julie's (Julia's) mother Mary was still alive after Julie's supposed father, Merritt, died, why would she put Julie up for adoption, and why in Canada?

As mentioned, the Canadian 1901 census lists Julie's parents as John and Pauline Davids. The fact that Julie's birthday in the census is the same as that on her death certificate and that you provided has to be more than a coincidence. This has to be the same Julie.

I'll have to check with the state to see if they have any record of a Julie (Julia) Thorn. If she had been put up for adoption by her mother, would the state reveal who Julie's birth mother was?

In the book, Steep Falls Cemetery, where did the author obtain her information? Did she just take it for granted that Julie must be Merritt's daughter because she is buried in the same plot?
