I have reason to believe that the James MOODY who lived in Standish, Cumberland Co., Maine may Not be a son of Joshua Moody and Tabith Cox as the records have shown forever and ever.
I have just written a 3 page post regarding this at the Moody page if anyone is interested in reading it.
There were 3 James Moody's in Maine all born around the same time and all 3 seemed to have been Rev. War soldiers.
James Moody of Buxton, York Co., ME b.c1745 who married Elizabeth DONNELL in the Church of Christ by the Rev. Paul Coffin on Jan. 13, 1774 who is MY James and my 5th grt. grandfather.
James Moody of Standish (or was he of Standish?...old records say that he "came to this town" but Where did he come From and in What Year??) IGI records insist this James Moody was born in Hampton Falls, NH in 1750 which is where his wife Elizabeth Shaw was born.
So perhaps Standish James DID come there from NH with his new bride?
I also find it ironic that Standish James did not name any of his sons JOSHUA for his father who was a Justice of the Peace of Falmouth and quite well liked. Instead, Standish James names his sons Samuel, William, Daniel, James and Enoch. I find the name Enoch interesting because an Enoch Moody born 1713 in Newbury, MA came to Falmouth, ME and married 1st to a Dorcas COX in 1739. Enoch and Dorcas could very well have been the Parents of this James Moody of Standish. Dorcas died in Sept. 1743...during childbirth perhaps?? This was most common back then.
Enoch would most assuredly have had to give his young infant child to a family member to help raise. Would this family member have been his brother Sgt. Samuel Moody and wife Elizabeth GERRISH of Buxton, York Co., Maine??
This could be where the confusion lies.
This could also explain why the IGI records on the LDS site state that a James Moody was born c1750 to a Samuel Moody in Pearsontown, ME.
Pearsontown, ME is now called Scarboro, but back then it could have been part of Buxton since Buxton, Gorham, Standish and Scarboro are all very near each other.
Also because Enoch married a Cox and Joshua married a Cox, the records could have been confused from that as well.
There are numerous Moody's in the same area's born at the same times and with the same names used over and over again.
It could easily be mixed up.
I cannot find any Proof that the James Moody of Standish was actually a son of Joshua and Tabitha (Cox) Moody, and again because there is no similar naming of James children except for William, which could have been named for a brother, I see No similarities at all.
Enoch on the other hand could be the clue. He could have named his son for his ~real~ father!
One last thing, a cousin sent me a very nice Moody chart that shows the sons of Joshua Moody and Tabitha Cox, among others, and it shows them as having a son named James Moody who was a "Lt." James Moody born 1742 and who died April 6, 1809. IF that is correct then the James Moody of Standish is NOT this James because the Standish James Moody died Jan. 1818.
If Anyone can help sort this out or provide Proof of Standish James lineage, I would be Most Grateful to you.
Thank You for anything at all.
