I am a descendant of Abraham Alexander Sr, Chairman of the Mecklenberg Convention in 1775, Mecklenberg Co, NC. This family is descended from the Alexanders of Cecil County, where Abraham was born. His father was Elias Alexander. I am unsure of who Elias father was. Abraham arrived in NC in the mid 1700s. Some members of this family bought warrants in the New Munster Tract (Cecil Co), 1683. Abraham and the other Alexanders are the descendants of nine Alexander brothers and sisters, whose origins have never been definitively identified. Some think they came over on the ship Welcom in 1670 and settled in Somerset Co; however, a William Alexander took out a deed in Somerset Co, 1665 (first deed registered in the county, I'm told). This William apparently came up from Accomack in VA. Some say they were children of the famous Irish minister Rev. James Alexander, however, given the dates, he would have been 12 when the first child was born, which seems unlikely. The Rev's will shows no heirs, which tends to rule him out as the progenitor, though he is often cited as such. If anyone has information about the early Alexanders of Somerset Co, I would like to hear about it. In addition to trying to figure out who is related to whom and how, I would also like to know about the Indians of this area. I read that they accepted Christianity and married the settlers, ceasing to exist as a tribe in 1665. Did any of the early Alexanders marry Indians? There must not have been many white settlers in the area at this early time, so it seems plausible that they did. Thanks for any help. Notify Administrator about this message?
