I'll try to make a long story short. For over a hundred years there was a false belief that all Longfellow's in America descended from the immigrant William, Henry Wadsworth's Great Grandfather. In fact there is a second line from a Joseph Longfellow who lived in Queen Ann's County Maryland many of whose descendants migrated to Ohio and Indiana during the 18th century. We do not yet know from where this Joseph came, when or where he was born, or when he died, or where he is buried. All that is known about this Joseph is: 1. A Joseph Longfellow was one of three witnesses to the will of Elizabeth Browne on January 21, 1710 who left her personal property to her daughters Rebecca Neal and Mary Longfellow and the residue to “my son-in-law William Browne and his sister.” 2. The baptismal records of St. Like’s Parish, Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, show a son John born to Joseph and Elizabeth Longfellow on January 6, 1740. 3. A grant of land was given to John Longfellow [assumed to be Joseph’s son] on March 27, 1769 and recorded at Centerville, county seat of Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. The description reads, “beginning at the white oak standing on the south side of a swamp at the head of a small branch (creek) which runs by the plantation on which Joseph Longfellow formerly lived… containing fifty acres of land more or less.” Indicating that Joseph Longfellow, father of John, had died prior to 1769? If anyone can add to the knowledge base or can point me to research sources to learn more about this Joseph Longfellow please reply. Notify Administrator about this message?
