My great grandfather George Washington Columbus Beall grew up at Flint Hill, near Sandy Spring. Flint Hill was built by Edward Beall and Rachel Edmonston sometime after they married in 1770 on land she inherited from her father, Capt James Edmonston. Among the lands that Capt James willed to Rachel were "Lubberland" (in part), "Western Fields" and [Land of] Ease, all in Montgomery County, according to the Index of Patents on the nifty Archives of Maryland website. I would like to find out which of these properties Flint Hill was built on. What I would really like to know is whether Flint Hill is still standing. I have a photo taken by my uncle George Beall in 1979. The house looks like the drawing in Katharine Beall Adams' Maryland Heritage (opp p. 52); her reference was R. B. Farquhar's book on Montgomery County Homes, pp. 165-6, which I do not have access to. Adams placed the property on "the north side of the Norbeck to Norwood Road," near Silver Spring -- she must have meant SANDY Spring. George Washington Columbus married a Sandy Spring citizen, Mary Ann Palmer, sold his share of Flint Hill and in 1881 bought Sunnyside in nearby Derwood.
Would be grateful if anyone can help me learn more about Flint Hill.
