Ridgley/Ridgely's of MD
I have a Martha Virginia Ridgley/Ridgely (I have seen it spelled both ways)
in my ancestry and can't seem to find anything on her ancestors. She is my
2nd great grandmother.
Here's what I know:
Martha Virginia Ridgley (not sure how it is spelled) bn Feb 1879 or 1880,
Maryland. In one census listings she has a birthplace of Nova Scotia. But in the others she has Maryland. I don't know her parents names.
She is in a 1900 Federal census Election District 4, Howard, Maryland as a servant, cousin to Stephen R Hobbs & his sister Emma. In that same census there is a Ferdinand listed with another family, George Day, as a cousin. I don't know if he is related to Martha Virginia or not. I just now noticed his name on this census with hers & saw that they were both listed as "cousin".
She is listed in a 1910 census, Franklin Ward 1, Venango, Pennsylvania as
Martha Virginia Ridgley with my 2nd great grandfather, Clarence Lyle Muir,
who she married & had (at the time) 2 children, Edward Lyle (my great
grandfather) bn 1909 & sibling Elfrida V (I think Virginia is her given
middle name) bn. 1910. There was a third child born in 1911, Paul Ridgley
Muir.
By the 1920 census she was showing up in the Police Jury Ward 4, West Baton Rouge LA with her children Paul & (Elfrida) Virginia as a housekeeper.
Family stories go that she & Clarence divorced & she took the younger
children Elfrida Virginia & Paul Ridgley & moved to FL. It is said that she
married several times, possibly to someone with the surname of Bryant among others. It is believed she owned a hotel or motel business in FL & is
believed that she died approx 1963 in (maybe) Fort Lauderdale.
She went by Mattie V, Mattie & Virginia.
Please, anything you might know or be able to contribute would be so greatly appreciated.
