SPURRIER'S TAVERN
Some clarification please. On the web, there are 2 historical plaques near Jessup, MD, both refering to Spurrier's Tavern...a popular George Washington stopping place in the late 1700's. One calls it "Thomas Spurrier's" and is located near the actual site where the tavern once stood (now occupied by a Holiday Inn). The other is near the State Police Barracks in Waterloo. It says that a William Spurrier opened the tavern in 1771. If I'm not mistaken, Thomas and William were brothers, sons of Thomas & Venetia (Green) Spurrier. So, which plaque is right? Did Thomas, perhaps work with his brother...maybe as manager while brother William was owner? Both died around 1800-1801. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
