(7 Jul 1637) THOMAS RIVERS, alias MARSH, aged 21 yeares or thereabouts sworne & examined saith that he did see THOMAS DAVIS with his hand under ANNE CLARKE'S apron and furder that THOMAS DAVIS did say he had the ue of her and would have done it againe but could not and likewise the deponent saith that he heard somebody tale with the sd ANNE CLARKE and she answered that three wekks home was time enough [Lynnehaven in the lower county of Norfolke, Virginia]
MARSH, THOMAS (ca. 1615-ca. 1656). BORN: ca. 1615, probably in England. IMMIGRATED: in 1648/49 as a free adult with wife Margaret and children from Virginia. RESIDED: in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, 1637-1648/49; Broad Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County, 1649-death. MARRIED first, Margaret Harford. MARRIED second, Sarah (last name possibly Pitt). CHILDREN. SON: Thomas Marsh (ca. 1643-1679). DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth (?-1684), who married Thomas Taylor (?-1684/85); Margaret, who married first, Richard (?-by 1669), son of Richard Preston (ca. 1618-ca. 1669/70), and second, William Berry (ca. 1636-1691). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. Marsh gave bond for William Durand (?-1672), an elder of the Independent Church in Virginia, and left Virginia shortly after Durand was exiled. Marsh was cited by the court of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, for not attending the parish church and refusing to hear common prayer. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: transported to Virginia by Thomas Holt; called "Thomas Marsh (alias Rivers)"; Mr., by 1650. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: merchant, with vessel engaged in New England trade; planter; physician, 1651. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Parliamentary Commission, 1655. OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES: justice, Provincial Court, 1655; signer of treaty with Susquehanna Indians, July 5, 1652. LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Anne Arundel County, 1650. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: over 500 acres (had owned at least 150 acres in Upper Norfolk, Virginia, prior to emigration). WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: probably in late November or December 1655, certainly by March 20, 1656/57, when the administration of his estate was granted to his widow, Sarah Marsh. TAILLOR (TAYLOR), THOMAS (?-?). IMMIGRATED: by 1658, as a free adult. RESIDED: on "Taylor's Choice," West River Hundred, Anne Arundel County; returned to England, 1688/89. MARRIED possibly by September 1659, Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Sparrow (?-by 1659) of Anne Arundel County, a planter. Sparrow immigrated in 1649 with Elizabeth and two children and died between 1652 and 1659 with 1,400 acres of land surveyed. CHILDREN. SON: John, a merchant in London by 1692. STEPSONS: possibly Thomas Sparrow (by 1649-1675); possibly Solomon Sparrow (by 1659-1718). DAUGHTERS: probably Anne (?-1702), who married Samuel Chew (ca. 1660-1718), son of Samuel Chew (ca. 1630-1676/77). STEPDAUGHTER: possibly Elizabeth Sparrow (by 1649-?). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1658; Esq., by 1675; named a justice of the peace on his first appearance in Maryland records; one of the very few Protestants in appointive provincial office in the 1680s, but replaced by a Catholic as president of the Council in 1688; reasons unclear for his move to England in 1688/89; still alive and residing in London, 1709. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter, merchant; called merchant of London, 1690. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: instrumental in getting the Assembly to pass a law granting the proprietor an export duty of two shillings per hogshead of tobacco, 1671; testified in England for Lord Baltimore against the Protestant Associators, 1690.
