This is all that was found. No census, death, family.

John K MATHEWSON enl USN 6-13-1865 Baltimore MD, ordinary seaman; deserted 4-12-1867; b Australia; resided Allegany Co MD; dark complexion/lite hair/blue eyes; 5' 3 1/2"; has had smallpox

If he actually deserted he may have changed his name, or returned to Australia. You may also may not want his name on your vets memorial.

There is a John MATHEWSON chr 3-27-1840 Melbourne, s/o Robert/Barbara.
But I would imagine there is more than 1 John b 1840.
