Frederick County Petition, 1788

In March 1788, Jno. Gwinn, Joseph McKaleb, Hugh Thomson, William Kelly, Adam Good, Joseph Little, John Hughes, Danl. Boyle, Thos Barr, Jun., Sam Perry, John Rubantsan, John Trucks, John Smith, George Lufft, William Renner, George Trucks, Johan Ovelman, Michael Lind____, Valentine Roop, Zadock Nutten, John Baudeinz?, Charles Cladugh, Michael Null, Archibald Barr, John Buchanan, George Giess, Elijah Baldwin, Matthew Gatz, Friedrich ___hart, Peter Orndorf, Peter Clyder, James Ken, Valentine Bost, Peter Bost, Jesse Cool, Joseph Adams, Henry Siefert, Jno. Crawford, Frans. Sandback, James Wells, John Park, Lucke McGuire, Jacob Simmons, David Fisher, Madin? ____, ____ Zombro, Jacob Dortirdmon?, John Yingling, PETER DELL, John Grannmen, Michael Fisher, Michl. McGuire, Robert Torbert, Andrew Uhler, John Logsdon, Lorents F____, Andrew Krider, Daniel Kesler, Jacob Burgoon, Francis Burgoon, and Edward Parkinson signed a petition of sundry inhabitants of Frederick County to open a road from Taney Town to Westminster. The present road was inconvenient and there was no bridge over Big Pipe Creek. The petitioners desired to have a road “from Taney Town by Andrew Black’s Mill and from thence by the nearest and most convenient route to the publick road leading from Littles Town to Baltimore and within one mile of Westminster Town.” The proposed road would pass through the lands of Doct. Upton Scott, John Kislar, Jacob Burgoon, Valentine Bost, Andrew Hawn, and Cath. Wolsey to Cryder’s Church Thomas Barr, Senr. and Peter Bost were appointed commissioners. Andrew Black was to be charged with court fees. The petition was read and granted on 21 Mar 1788. The court ordered that the surveyor lay off the road. On 12 Aug 1788, James Duvall, Surveyor, reported to the court that he had surveyed the road that was to pass from Taneytown to Cryder’s Church.

There were other totally illegible names on the petition.

Cryder's Church is Kreider’s Church (Pipe Creek) - now known as Kreider’s United Church of Christ, Kriders Cemetery Road, Westminster, (now) Carroll County, MD 21158
