James Phillips born MD c. 1764

James Phillips was born no later than 1764-65 (date calculated by his having been 45+ at the 1810 census and having been granted land in SC in 1785). He was in Cheraws District SC in 1790 and Darlington District SC in 1810 (likely this was the same location just with the name changed). Maybe he was in Robeson Co. NC in 1800. He migrated to Newton Co. GA after 1820 and died there in 1834.

On the 1880 census, his youngest son, Trustin Phillips, identifed his father's birthplace as Maryland. Other sons were named Joel, James, Jr., Elijah, Daniel and Solomon. Can anyone place James Phillips in a Maryland family of the 18th century?

Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
