The Monumental City: Its Past History and Present By George Washington Howard Published 1873 J.D. Ehlers & co [Baltimore Cemetery, situated at the northeastern boundary of the city, on the Belair road, its main entrance being only a few yards from the terminus of the City Passenger Company's "Red Line" Cars. The Baltimore Cemetery Company was organized more than twenty-five years ago, having been incorporated by the Legislature of Maryland in December, 1849. Its organization was naturally prompted by the rapidly increasing population and corresponding increase in the mortality of the city. The site selected is an elevated plateau, having attractive and extensive views and surroundings, and comprises one hundred acres of Isnd, which have been tastefully laid oat in burial lots, wide carriage drives, and walks, allowing to each lot separate approaches. Many beautiful and elaborated monuments and tombs line the various avenues, illustrating in their skillful workmanship and the purity of the material selected, both the taste and judgment of the owners, and the superior dexterity of the chisels of our city marble workers. Among the prominent structures which adorn the cemetery is the Mausoleum, situated to the right of, and near the main entrance. It is built entirely of white marble, and in the ancient Egyptian style of architecture ; the most appropriate and suggestive of all the orders, for the solemn purposes for which such structures are designed. Near this, is the Chapel, erected of the sombre brown stone, and in the Mediseval Gothic style. A massive granite Gateway marks the main entrance, built in the Battle Abbey style of Norman English architecture. Many portions of the grounds have been handsomely improved with costly marble curbings around the lots for continuous squares in extent. A number of churches, humane societies and beneficial orders have selected burial lots in this cemetery, and variously improved and ornamented them, among them the Masons, Odd Fellow and others. All religious denominations bury within its precincts, and it is entirely free from sectarian or denominational prejudice and control. Its officers and Board of Managers are the following, and comprise, as will be seen, those among our wealthiest and best known citizens: Thomas Wilson, President; Geo. A. Reed, Sectretary and Treasurer; Francis White, Dr. Caleb Winslow and Robert Q. Taylor, Board of Managers; A. Harryman, Superintendent. Office No. 8 South street, very near to American and Sun newspaper buildings.] Notify Administrator about this message?
