John Rezin MAGRUDER is my GGG Grandfather married (according to my research) to Susanna Nelson BOTELER (pronounced and often spelled "Butler"). Children include Anna, Elias Lewis, Henry Alexander (my GG Grandfather), Edward, Elizabeth, Samuel E., Arthur J. R., Hezekiah C., Sarah Ann Maria. His parents were Samnuel MAGRUDER and Ann CLAGETT; grandparents Samuel MAGRUDER and Jane HASWELL.
Trying to sort out all the "Samuels" is a serious task. My accounts conform with those of the American Clan Gregor Society (ACGS). They adopted some numbers simply to sort one Samuel from another in generations so they attached "4" to the Samuel who married Ann Clagett; "3" to the one who married Jane Haswell, etc. In addition, as the census and other records reveal, some Samuels used "III" "II" or "Sr." "Jr" or "Capt." or "Col" from time to time to distinguish themselves from one another. Tis a daunting challenge to determine who's who. In addition, as you may already have encountered, there are some who toss out all the long-standing "claims" of the ACGS and substitute their own version. In short, there's a hulabaloo. I must confess that I have been concentrating on later generations and focusing on one of the families [MILLER] that MY Magruder line married into. I intend to get back and try to add details (and proof) to my earlier Magruder findings and welcome your efforts to get the record straight.
