I am descended from the Nelsons and have lots of information and lots of questions. I can tell you that Richard Nelson who died in 1709 was married to Mary Beck. That I can prove. Richard arrived in the province of Maryland in 1679. I think his brother was John, but have never been able to prove it. I think I am descended through his son Richard who died before February 1727 and I think his wife was Ann Booker. I have not found Howland mentioned in any estate records of the son Richard. If I could, it would certainly make me feel more comfortable with my line. I also have not found a copy of the will of Richard of Richard. Records say his will was probated on 20 Nov 1727, but where is the will? I know Richard of Richard had three children and one was Thomas. The other two are unknown to me.
There are several John Nelsons and I have not been able to sort them, but I think the one who paid quit rents on Howland from 1754-74 was the one who was the son of William of Richard. And it was this John who died in 1778 and was the father of Richard, Chloe, Ann, Mary, John, Frederick, Sarah, and Margaret.
I have a note that Sarah Nelson of John may have married Perry Taylor in Edgecombe County, North Carolina about 1778. I think that note came from you.
