I did look at the 1850 census record for your ancestor, Jane Swann and in the record it look as if Betsy Swann age 59, was her mother or some other relative. I am also researching the African American Swann family of Charles County, Maryland. Through my few years of research, I have noticed that there are a lot of Swann families that are in Charles County. Many of the Swann families from Charles County, MD had large families. You may also run into other families such as the Harley, Proctor, Butler, Thompson, and Carter. My Swann family can be traced to my ggg grandfather Walter "Watts" Swann born in 1817 and died in 1880. He and his wife Ann, had 10 children, the youngest child was my gg grandfather Sydney Augustus Swann, who was born in 1879. My Swann family is primarily from Pomonkey, MD, but there were a few that moved to Washington, DC. One helpful hint that may help you as you research the Swann family is that on some records they tended to spell the name Swan and not Swann during the 1920's and 30's.

I hope that this helps!
