LOOKING FOR DESCENDANTS OF Col. Samuel Hanson & Mary Kay of Charles county, Maryland I received an email from Janet McFarland of Alexandria, VA. She is an active member of a local District of Columbia, Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter, Eleanor Wilson. She is not a descendant of Col Samuel Hanson, but her chapter is going to mark his and his wife's grave Saturday April 19, 2008 (tentative date) in Congressional Cemetery, Washington, DC and they are looking for descendants to invite to this celebration. If you are a descendant please contact her. If you know of other descendants please forward this message on. She is starting from scratch in finding descendants to attend our ceremony. If you have any interest in joining the DAR (or SAR), they will be adding the Colonel as a genealogical line of descent for membership. Col. Samuel Hanson was the son of Gen. Samuel Hanson and Anne "Nancy" Hawkins and the nephew of John Hanson, the 1st President of the US (under the Articles of Confederation). He married Mary Key or Kay (I personally believe that her name is "Kay" because of the names of children and grandchildren) of New Jersey (d/o Isaac Kay??) on 29 Apr 1777 in Pennsylvania. (Church of Christ & St. Peter ???) Unfortunately, Mary Kay Hanson's obituary did not document her age or maiden name. Col. Samuel Hanson, II and wife Mary Kay's children were: 1. Maria Hanson b: 30 DEC 1781 in Charles County, Maryland or DC m. Hon. Daniel Sheffey 2. Samuel Hanson IV b: 14 MAY 1786 in Charles County, Maryland m. Matilda Calloway Hickman 3. Isaac Kay Hanson b: 14 JAN 1790 in Charles County, Maryland m. Maria Harrison Jones 4. Thomas Hanson b: 10 AUG 1792 in Charles County, Maryland no information, died young?? 5. Ann Hanson b: 9 DEC 1793 in Georgetown, Washington, DC died unmarried 6. John Hanson b: 1795 in Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia - died young 7. Serena Lousia Hanson b: 25 FEB 1799 in Georgetown, Washington, DC m. Hon. Gen. Roger Chew Weightman (Roger Chew Weightman was the Mayor of Washington, DC and a Gen. during the War of 1812) Lieut. Colonel Samuel Hanson commanded a regiment of Militia from Charles Co., Maryland. He served in the Maryland Line under General Washington from 20 Nov 1777 to 8 May 1778. All descendants of these children are invited to respond to this messages to receive an invitation to the installation of Col. Samuel Hanson to the files of the DAR as a Patriot and recognition for his service to our county. This ceremony will be in April 2008. His father, Gen. Samuel Hanson has already been documented as a patriot, but his descendants are welcome to respond, as are any other Hanson descendants. Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Please any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated.
