According to Robert Jarrell's obituary in the "Denton Journal" on Saturday, December 18, 1880, page 3, he died on "Sunday evening last at his residence near Greensborough", which would have been December 12, 1880. "... in August last he resigned the Chief-Judgeship of the Orphan's Court on account of his health; from that time on he grew steadily worse, the terrible tumor in his side increasing and producing inanition which was the immediate cause of his death." He was elected to the court in 1867, 1871, 1875 and 1879 and was commissioned Chief-Judge on the death of Judge Ford at the beginning of his fourth term. He was a member, class-leader and steward at the Southern Methodist Church at Goldsborough.
