I live in Calgary, Alberta but was born in Scotland. My grandafther was William McWhinnie who was a boiler maker in the shipyards in Galsgow. He worked until he was 72 before retiring. I can trace the McWhinnie family lineage back into the mid 1800's. There are many ties to older records but it is difficult to make some real connections. In my case it is fairly easy to recognize potential predecessors because my baptized name is Cunningham McWhinnie, although I am known as Ken. This has been a common thread in my family. I noted for example that Rabbie Burns' best friend and drinking cronie was a fellow called Ken McWhinnie. Some day I'll try to make the connection and show that he was really called Cunningham.
